The Sister viewers are left shocked by ‘weird and creepy’ motive behind Elise’s murder

It was criticised for its slow-paced plot earlier this week – but The Sister has finally revealed just what happened to victim Elise, and the ‘weird and creepy’ truth has shocked viewers.

The third episode of the four-part supernatural thriller, which aired last night on ITV, revealed how paranormal investigator Bob (played by Bertie Carvel) had helped set up the young woman’s death to try and create a ghost.

Adapted from Luther creator Neil Cross’ novel Burial, the series follows Nathan (Russell Tovey), who’s spent years trying to atone for the passing of Elise (Simone Ashley) after believing he was to blame, since she died during intercourse with him.

But in the latest show, it’s divulged that Elise cracked open her skull against the car during the steamy session after digesting drugs from Bob, who to the shock of his acquaintance Nathan, ‘nudged’ the tragic situation along in a bid to create a haunted area.

Viewers were left shocked with the paranormal investigator’s confession, with one writing: ‘Well wasn’t expecting that, Bob killed her to make a ghost.’

Another said: ‘Wow. I can’t make my bed but Bob thinks he can make a ghost…. This just gets weirder and weirder.’

A third added: ‘I KNEW IT! Damn you creepy bob,’ while a fourth wrote: ‘Oh man what a place to leave it! Pretty gripping that, I enjoyed it tonight.

‘Was wondering how the whole thing with ghosts connected but makes sense now. Looking forward to the concluding part tomorrow now.’

But in last night’s episode, viewers finally discovered how Elise died – with Bob admitting he had created the situation to try and create a ghost.

Bob, Elise and Nathan met at a New Year’s Eve party before all finding themselves in the same woodland area on their way home.

The paranormal investigator asked Elise and Nathan – who quickly appeared smitten – to join him for a ride in his car to another party before pausing their journey.

Explaining that he needed a bathroom break, Bob left the couple in the car after giving Elise some drugs.

The situation soon escalated between the duo and they started having intercourse – only for Elise to start gesturing wildly before cracking her head open on the closed car door.

Bob returned and accused Nathan of hurting Elise before calmly insisting they bury her in the woodland area.

The paranormal investigator, who visited Nathan a decade on to urge him to help dig up Elise’s body ahead of a housing development being built where she’s buried, later revealed how he ‘nudged’ the tragic situation along.

He said: ‘One of the most common forms of haunting is the roadside ghost. Usually it’s the apparition of a young woman who’s died after sex. She’s been buried in unhallowed ground – usually between a road and a river.

She tends to manifest as a lost young woman, seeking help. So after what happened, I used to scan the papers to see if they’d been any reported sightings, anything that might be… Elise Fox.

I’d drive down the lane at night, sometimes two or three times a week, more in the early days but she was never there. According to all the literature, all the tradition, all the folklore, she should’ve been in the woods but she wasn’t.’

Bob then shockingly admitted: ‘I thought I’d done something wrong, made a mistake,’ while Nathan replies: ‘What does that mean?’

‘Come on it was perfect,’ said Bob. ‘The dark woods, running water, the lovers lane, the young woman, the sex, it was all there all the elements. How could I not grasp an opportunity like that… to prove it, that we’re more than this, this s***.’

A stunned Nathan responded: ‘I’m finding it hard to understand this. Prove it how?’

‘By making a ghost’, confessed Bob. ‘I was pretty sure that if Elise died in that place, in those circumstances, the result would be a haunting so I nudged things along.’

An outraged Nathan replied: ‘You did it, she died Bob. A person died and you killed her. Jesus Christ, do you know what you’ve done to us?’

In previous episodes, viewers saw how Nathan had befriended Elise’s sister Holly (Amrita Acharia) and ended up married to her – despite never revealing his connection to her lost sibling.

But his guilty conscious caught up with him in last night’s programme as he told detective and family friend Jacki (Nina Toussaint-White) that he lied in his original police interview.
