On average parents spend a whopping £71 on stocking fillers alone for their little ones, but Phillip Schofield has proved that the pricey tag might not be needed.
The This Morning presenter, 57, from Oxfordshire, asked a class of 27 young pupils to pick their favourite stocking goodies and surprisingly, it was a £1.99 stretchy poo toy that came out on top from a host of products, ranging in price up to £15.
In the latest episode of ITV’s How to spend it well at Christmas, which airs this evening at 8pm, Phillip explored the toys topping youngsters’ yuletide wish lists.
The host is joined by celebrity guests Stacey Soloman, English striker Jamie Vardy and wife Rebecca, plus racing driver Billy ‘the Whizz’ Monger, when testing out the best tech games, remote control cars, and fancy dress costumes.
Phillip’s top three must-haves included Pictionary Air (costing £20), which sees users draw in front of them with a pen before it is transferred to a tablet, Bank Attack (£24.99), where families work to unlock a vault of gold, and the stretch poo toy.

He said: ‘The Bank Attack game the families loved and it was good value too and I love the idea of a game that you have to work together to win.
‘Pictionary Air is a smart fun way to combine new tech with a popular game. Stacey and the kids loved it and so did I. Then Stretchy Poo for just £1.99. What can I say, sometimes you just have to listen to the kids and keep it simple.’
Speaking about stocking fillers, Phillip said: ‘As well as the big gift under the tree, these can cost a small fortune.
‘Santa spends on average nearly a £100 on a child’s stocking fillers but does he need to be quite so generous?’

Tied in first place was Roblox figurines (£14.99), a slime ninja (£5.99) and the £1.99 stretchy poo toy.
The average cost of the children’s stockings – after picking six toys each – was £55, £16 less than the average £71, according to estimates by Barclaycard and Netmums.

Testing out tech toys, they played with Lego Hidden Side (£20) which saw the vehicle the kids had been building turn up in a computer level on their tablet.

They also tried a Harry Potter Invisibility Cloak (£60), with Stacey admitting: ‘This would’ve been my dream toy as a kid. I’m so excited for this.’
But after learning the price, she added: ‘I think I’m a thumbs down, I love it so much because I’m obsessed with Harry Potter but I do think it’s really rather expensive for an app and a piece of material.’
It was Pictionary Air which impressed the family and Phillip the most, as Stacey drew a gate in front of her just using a pen which was then seen on the boys’ tablet.
‘I would pay £2O for a conventional board game so to get it on an app is great,’ Stacey said. ‘I haven’t got to store it anywhere – winning – as honestly my games cupboard is ridiculous.’

The first Christmas treats to be tried on the show were four animal toys, with Owlies (£49.99), Juno the Elephant (£89.99), Nestlings (£49.99), and Rizmo being used by four seven-year-olds for 60 minutes a day for a week.
Rizmo (£59.99) – which evolves from a baby to an adult cuddly toy in front of children’s eyes – was played with the most for 434 minutes out of a possible 1680.
The most expensive toy came in last, Nestlings, a bird-type product which gave birth to miniature versions of itself, was third, and Owlies scored second spot – with the children loving the challenge of making the owl fly.
Looking at family games against the clock next, the show saw several families, as well as Jamie and Rebecca Vardy and their children, explore the latest ones on offer.
Not impressed with Tap It (£29.99), a game which involved tapping coloured pods the fastest, Jamie said: ‘I’ve got a great idea for this game, just throw it in the bin. We’re going to miss Christmas dinner at this rate.’

Then racing driver Billy ‘the Whizz’ Monger and Phillip tried out remote control cars, with the Monster Jam Grave Digger (£99) proving to be a firm favourite.
Elsewhere, Stacey arrived back on the scene to help children find the best Frozen’s Elsa and Spider-Man costumes.
Three outfits – from different high street stores – of each character were shown to three girls and three boys.
The Spider-Man ensembles were from Matalan (£16), John Lewis (£24.99) and the Disney Store (£31). The Elsa attires were purchased from Asda (£16), M&S (£22.50) and the Disney Store (£61).

A unanimous decision from the boys saw them pick the most expensive costume as the best looking – but the girls each picked a different Snow Queen dress as their favourite.
The children were then sent to test the durability of each costume by completing a muddy obstacle course.
With a West End costume designer judging how the outfits fared, the Disney Store’s Spider-Man came in last, while John Lewis was crowned the victor, coming out the forest virtually unharmed.
For those wanting to dress as Elsa, it seemed the Disney Store’s costume excels, while M&S’ ensemble was award third place after showing early signs of wear and tear.
