Melbourne Cup 2020: Kmart woman creates her own fascinator using a $1.75 placemat

A crafty woman has made her own fascinator to wear on Melbourne Cup day using a $1.75 placemat from Kmart.

Louise, from Sydney, wanted to get dressed up to celebrate the races at work but she couldn’t bear the thought of forking out $50 on a head piece that she would likely wear once.

And so she created her accessory using budget items – including feathers, a $2 hair clip, $2.50 piece of tulle, $10 fabric glue and a black round placemat.

‘When you refuse to pay $50+ for a hat/fascinator for Melbourne Cup, so you use your creativity,’ she wrote on Facebook.

‘Some feathers, $2 hair clip, $10 fabric glue and (the pièce de résistance) a placemat from Kmart to make one.’

Louise assembled her statement piece, which cost her about $16, by using clothes pegs to hold its unique shape while the glue dried, and she styled it with a piece of tulle and feathers.
