Kate Middleton does Dynasty: Duchess of Cambridge launches photo contes in ’80s-style shoulder pads

It’s the annual launch pad for stunning images of animals which showcase the best of nature.

And the Duchess of Cambridge heralded this year’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition – wearing shoulder pads which appeared to come straight from classic 1980s soap Dynasty.

Kate, 38, who will announce the winner of the competition in a virtual awards ceremony tonight, stepped in front of TV cameras in a video filmed in the Natural History Museum’s Hintze Hall in London.

With tumbling curls and the padded black tuxedo jacket – similar to the look of Joan Collins as Alexis Carrington in Dynasty – she spoke warmly of the photography competition.

The Alexander McQueen crepe tuxedo with satin lapels is a favourite of Kate, who also wore pearl earrings and had glossy ‘brondette’ highlights in her hair.

Founded in 1964, the museum’s contest is the world’s longest running and most prestigious annual wildlife photography prize.

Museum patron Kate described the winning photos as ‘truly spectacular’.

Do power dressing like Kate in a blazer by Alexander McQueen

There’s a reason the Duchess of Cambridge turns to Alexander McQueen time and time again.

In the years since the label created her iconic wedding gown she’s worn McQueen for many high profile occasions, but this impeccably tailored black trouser suit has got to be right up there with our favorites.

Check out the peaked satin lapels and distinctive angular pockets. It perfectly nips her in at the waist and creates a gorgeous silhouette thanks to the structured shoulders. Add in a pair of Accessorize pearl hoop earrings and it’s a super smart ensemble. Doesn’t she look glowing?

Kate’s satin-trim design has sold out, but click (right) to take a closer look, then buy a very similar McQueen blazer at Luisa Via Roma (below).

Or check out the more budget-friendly black blazers we’ve found for you elsewhere, with look-a-like options from Patrizia Pepe, Reiss, and & Other Stories.

She added: ‘I’ve been lucky enough to have a quick preview and I can say it’s truly spectacular.

I can’t wait for you all to see it.’

Selected from over 49,000 entries from around the world by a panel of experts, the winning images will be exhibited at the museum on Friday before touring around the UK and internationally.

The ceremony can be watched on YouTube at 8pm tonight.
