Get fit in 15 minutes: The best exercise and nutrition to improve your flexibility

WHAT TO DO

To improve your flexibility, try this leg extension exercise, says celebrity personal trainer Nadya Fairweather (u-shape.co.uk). 

Grab a small hand towel or yoga strap. Lie on your back, left leg extended and relaxed on the floor, bend your right leg and loop the towel under your right foot. 

Holding the ends of the towel, extend your right foot in the air. Hold the stretch for a minute or until you feel yourself relax into it. 

Switch legs. Repeat on the left. Include thi s stretch after your exercise routine on a regular basis when you are still warm as part of your cool down.

WHAT TO EAT

If you want to touch your toes, diet can help, too, says nutritionist Shona Wilkinson (shonawilkinson.com). Red wine — and this will please many — contains an antioxidant called resveratrol. 

It can help to reduce inflammation, which will improve flexibility. But don’t have too much, or it has the opposite effect. Olive oil is a source of oleocanthal— it’s what gives it it’s bitterness. 

Oleocanthal can also help to reduce inflammation. Always opt for extra virgin olive oil, for added health benefits. 

Turmeric is rich in a substance called curcumin, which suppresses the production of certain chemicals, which can help to reduce pain and swelling. Try adding it to casseroles and even try turmeric tea.
