A psychotherapist has revealed how the pressure to socialise again once lockdown restrictions are relaxed could lead to people feeling ‘anxious and overwhelmed’.

Claire Goodwin-Fee 44, from Kent, who has founded a confidential support service for frontline workers, spoke of how it could take weeks, months or even years for the full psychological effects of a challenging or traumatic time such as lockdown to emerge.

She spoke of how people are likely to feel unsure, scared and confused about reintegrating back into their social circles and urged people to set realistic goals.

It comes after a mother on the British parenting site Mumsnet revealed how she finds the relaxing of lockdown rules ‘stressful’ and revealed how an ‘unexpected’ visitor waving on her drive made her feel ‘nervous’.

Speaking to FEMAIL, Claire said: ‘People may feel unsure, scared and confused about how to reintegrate back into their social circles and perhaps the wider communities they live in.

‘Many may have taken this time to reassess their lives and may want to make sweeping changes.

‘I believe a common issue will be the feelings of anxiety about getting back out into the community and what will be considered safe as we move forward.

Claire added how the idea of ‘socialising’ while remaining ‘socially distant’ is a struggle we may all feel difficult to navigate.

‘A lack of confidence in themselves and social skills may also be a consideration for many, such as, what is the etiquette now of socialising whilst being socially distant?’

PRESSURE TO SOCIALISE WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY

Speaking about a pressure to socialise once restrictions are relaxed, Claire said: ‘Unrealistic expectations are not healthy for anyone, whether it be when we have them about ourselves or that someone has them about us.

‘If people fell pressurised to return to socialising before they are ready, they can feel anxious and overwhelmed.

She added: ‘It will be fairly normal to feel odd and a little out of place to start with, thats a very normal response to an abnormal situation.’

In order to not offend friends and family, Claire advised to be open with loved ones about your feeling and to acknowledge your own needs.

‘Friends, family and other support networks can all be helpful, especially if they are open to discussing emotional wellbeing and are non judgmental, Claire explained.

‘Seek emotional support if you believe that you are struggling, there is a lot of professional support out there ready to help.’

RESPECTING PERSONAL SPACE

Socialising may be exciting at first but it can also be exhausting, Claire revealed.

Speaking about being mindful of personal space, she said: ‘Most of us have been in the same households for months, living with high levels of stress and have experienced a lot of emotional fatigue.

‘This can often be experienced as needing to sleep more often and feeling overwhelmed.

‘Think about boundaries and regulate the amount of access that people have to you, and don’t be afraid to take time out by yourself if needed.

‘Privacy is a fundamental human need, don’t be afraid to ask for space if you need it, particularly if you are feeling overwhelmed.’

SUPPORTING NEW PARENTS

Family and friends are likely to want to see the new arrival but Claire urged people to not ‘turn up unannounced’.

She said: ‘Where possible hand control of the arrangements over to the new parents.

‘Ask them what they may need and what would be the easiest way to spend time with them?’

She continued: ‘It may be that they want to get out of the house or it maybe that they don’t want to venture outside their sanctuary just yet.

‘Please don’t turn up unannounced and set a reasonable time to spend with other people as this may be exhausting at first.

‘Approach things gently to start with and gauge how the other person may be feeling, ask them how it feels to be socialising again.’

HOW TO LOOK AFTER YOUR MENTAL HEALTH

Claire complied a list of her five top tips to keep your mental health in check:

1. Self care: Yes it is banded about daily but it is even more important post pandemic.

We have all been though weeks and weeks of different pressures and stresses.

When dealing with yourself and others, take a moment to remember this as it may require some adaptations on everyones part.

2. Good sleep routine: This will help with both the physical and the mental challenges that you have been though and are yet to come.

So get enough sleep with no gadgets before and set a standard time to get up and go to bed.

3. Remember when you have coped with challenging situations: However, you have got through the last months you have survived whether you limped through it or not. You have done a good job.

4. Share your feelings: Accept how you feel and set realistic ways to honour them.

There are no bad emotions and even crying is good for you when needed.

5. Dealing with stress: Avoiding something that is causing stress may work in the short term but will create more issues in the future.

It is better to gently expose yourself to the idea of what makes you feel stressed and build resilience.

Set a realistic goal and gently build up to what you want to achieve and you may even enjoy yourself along the way.

BE HONEST WITH HOW YOU ARE FEELING

Claire revealed how most people have been negatively affected in some way and ‘possibly traumatised’ by living with the threat of coronavirus, loss of loved ones and insecurity surrounding jobs and a return to ‘normal’ life.

She revealed how it may be helpful to start thinking about how you want to reintegrate into society.

Claire explained: ‘Even if everything were to go back to being ‘normal’ straight away, on some level people have been negatively affected and possibly traumatised by living with the threat of a serious illness.

And she spoke of how most people on some level are ‘grieving’ for their previous life after many felt shocked following lockdown with anxiety levels generally high.

She added: ‘After any kind of challenging, and dare I say it, traumatic event it can take weeks, months or even years for the full psychological effects to emerge.

‘We will see higher rates of anxiety, depression and post traumatic stress in people as they struggle to integrate their experiences.

‘This coupled with a larger feeling in our communities of shock and trauma will take years to overcome if at all.’

However Claire said how there will be a ‘shared collective experience’ of lockdown which will evoke a camaraderie similar to that of the war.

‘People will share lockdown stories and discuss their experiences about what it was like to live through this period of time,’ she said.

‘Normalising how you feel with your friends and family will help to elevate some of the long term negative effects. But remember they have also been though a difficult experience too.’

Claire continued: ‘This may be a good time to seek a professional to speak with to ward off any major issues down the line.

‘As they say prevention is better than cure and so it is the same with mental health.’

Jinger Duggar has opened up about the ‘overwhelming feelings of sadness and loss’ she experienced last fall when she suffered a miscarriage.

The 26-year-old is excitedly anticipating the arrival of her second child with husband Jeremy Vuolo, 32, in November, but just a day after announcing her pregnancy to the world, she is taking time to reflect on the pregnancy she lost last November.

In a lengthy Instagram post today, the mom of 22-month-old daughter Felicity said that ‘tears filled [her] eyes’ and ‘sadness cloaked [her] soul’ when she realized she’d lost the baby — just one day after sharing her pregnancy news with her family.

Yesterday, Jinger and Jeremy announced that she is 15 weeks pregnant baby number two, another little girl.

But in sharing their happy news, they also revealed that Jinger has suffered a miscarriage along the way, and today she followed up with more details about the experience.

‘I’m excited! Yet, the overwhelming feelings of joy and anticipation that I’m feeling today are a sharp reminder of the overwhelming feelings of sadness and loss I felt last November,’ she wrote.

‘On a Monday evening, Jer and I were rejoicing with our families as we announced that I was pregnant. Yet, in God’s perfect timing, it was the next morning that I awoke knowing something wasn’t right.

‘Within moments I knew that I’d lost the baby. Tears filled my eyes, sadness cloaked my soul. Having just lost my grandmother months before, the news of new life was like spring lilies blossoming after a dark, cold winter. And in a moment, that life was gone.’

Jinger’s grandmother, Mary Duggar, had died on June 9 at the age of 78.

'Within moments I knew that I’d lost the baby. Tears filled my eyes, sadness cloaked my soul,' she said (pictured after the death of her grandmother in June 2019)

‘I know many of you can relate,’ she went on. ‘The minutes feel like hours, the hours like days, don’t they? I was helpless — nothing I could do would restore the lost life. Yet, I was never hopeless.

‘In those moments, I did the only thing I could. I rehearsed the timeless truths upon which I’ve anchored my soul — the truth that God is sovereign and he is good,’ she said.

‘The truth that Job recited, thousands of years ago, in his agony: “The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.”

‘The pain doesn’t leave quickly. It’s not meant to. But in the midst of pain, the hope we hold is in God who works “all things together for good for those who love him and are called according to his purpose” (Rom 8:28). Dear friends, the reality is, at times we are helpless. But never, and I mean never, do we have to be hopeless.’

Jeremy, too, shared his thoughts on the loss.

‘Today’s joy is not without sorrow,’ he wrote. ‘I’ll never forget that moment when we realized we’d lost the baby.’

He went on to say how he, too, looked to his faith for comfort, concluding: ‘As we pray for her safe development in the womb, we can’t help but rejoice, even if there’s sorrow mixed in.’

The pair had kept quite about the miscarriage at the time, but revealed it on Thursday as they announced their baby news — and TLC announced that the new season of Counting On will premiere June 30.

The couple moved across the country last summer so that Jeremy could attend the Master’s Seminary at Grace Community Church, and their move will also be covered in the new season.

It seems that the cameras were also be there as the couple dealt with miscarriage, too, will

‘That was very difficult and definitely a trial for us,’ Jeremy said.

‘In those times when your faith is tried, you just run to God all the more,’ Jinger added. ‘We were just praying together, talking with family, had friends at our church here that just surrounded us.

‘It was such a hard time, but Jer just really supported me, and it was just such a tremendous blessing to have many people who loved on us in that difficulty.’

But most of yesterday’s announcement was focused on their baby joy, with Jinger writing on Instagram: ‘We’ll definitely have our hands full! But there’s nothing else we’d rather carry.’

The couple celebrated their second daughter with an all-pink photoshoot. In the images, Jeremy matched Jinger’s pink dress with a pink bowtie and flower in his pocket, while their daughter Felicity, who turns two on July 19, wore a pink bow in her hair and matching Mary Janes.

‘Jeremy and I both guessed it was a girl, just a gut feeling we had. And we couldn’t be happier,’ Jinger wrote.

‘The bond that sisters share is unique, and one I cherish every day. After all these years, they’re still my best friends! I’m glad God’s giving that gift for Felicity to enjoy.’

On his own page, Jeremy added: ‘Recently, she’s been practicing her big-sistering on dolls, cradling and shushing them to sleep. Pretty soon, she’ll be holding a real baby. But she’s ready, and so are we.

‘Life is beautiful! We are praising God for this precious little gift,’ he said.

Speaking to People, Jinger shared her excitement over their impending arrival.

‘We are so excited,’ she said. ‘Everything looks great with the baby. We’re so thankful. Had a lot of check-ups and we’re just really, really excited.’

‘We told [Felicity], but she doesn’t quite understand everything yet,’ Jinger said. ‘Not being two yet, but she, she comes up to my belly and says, “Baby. Baby.”‘

Women in the Duggar family — and wives of the Duggar men — tend to have quite a lot of children, though Jinger and Jeremy appear to be spacing out their family planning a bit more than the others, having waited nearly a year to get pregnant the first time.

Meanwhile, her oldest sibling, sex pest Josh, is 32 and already has six children with his wife Anna, 31.

Her sister Jessa, 27, has three children with husband Ben Seewald, 25. Joe, 25, and his wife Kendra, 21, have two kids, and Joy Anna, 22, is expecting her second with husband Austin Forsyth, 26.

Jill, 29, has two sons with husband Derick Dillard, 31.

Only John David, 30, and his wife Abbie, 28, and Josiah, 23, and his wife Lauren, 21, are parents to one child each.

The Duggar women are also known to document every step of their pregnancies, from announcements to gender reveals to baby showers, with many of the births being filmed for TV.

Several have also been candid about miscarriages. Jinger joins her sister Joy Anna, Josh’s wife Anna, Josiah’s wife Lauren, and her own mother in having suffered the loss of a pregnancy.

Anna has kept mostly silent on the experience, while Lauren, Joy Anna, and Jinger’s mom Michelle have been quite vocal.

Joy Anna suffered a devastating miscarriage at 20 weeks last summer, and had to deliver the fetus in a hospital. She and Austin named the baby Annabel and held a tear-filled commemorative photoshoot in the hospital.

Lauren lost a pregnancy at five weeks, and has spoken tearfully about it in several interviews and episodes of Counting On. She and Josiah decided it was a boy, named it Asa, and have paid tribute on social media.

‘For a long time, I was in depression for so long that to me life had no purpose, or something like that, and it hurt. It just hurt really bad,’ she said in an episode of Counting On.

‘I remember hearing people say, “I went through a depression” and all I think is, “whatever.” But knowing that I am going through it, I’m like, “Oh, I am so sorry,” cause I know what it feels like to live your life like every day’s worthless,’ she said.

When she she got pregnant again soon after, she even had a special cake for ‘Big Brother Asa’ at her baby shower.

Michelle, meanwhile, has pointed to a miscarriage early in her marriage as the reason she and Jim Bob are so against birth control.

The couple revealed that initially, they thought they’d have just two or three kids, and Michelle went on the pill for the first few years of their marriage.

After having their eldest son Josh, Michelle went back on the pill, but got pregnant while taking it. They ended up losing that baby and were so grieved that, through prayer, they decided to ‘give that area of our life to the Lord,’ letting God decide on when and how often they would have kids.

Back in early March, there had been some speculation that Jinger was pregnant when she traveled from her new home in California to visit her family in Arkansas.

During her visit, nearly every single woman and girl in the Duggar family got together for lunch, and some later went out together on a shopping trip.

The group outing had fans wondering if one of the women was about to announce a pregnancy, with Jinger and Joy Anna earning the highest bets.

Just two weeks later, Joy Anna announced that she was pregnant with a baby girl, admitting she was ‘super excited’ but ‘nervous’ after suffering a miscarriage at 20 weeks in July.

But it seems that Jinger may have also been sharing baby news with her family at the time.

A seven-year-old boy from North Carolina thew a beautiful backyard prom for his beloved 17-year-old babysitter after the dance was canceled at her high school.

When Curtis Rogers’ mom told him that his babysitter, Rachel Chapman, would miss her senior prom at Sanderson High School in Raleigh, the little boy suggested that they host a mini prom for her at their house.

‘I was so surprised,’ Rachel told Good Morning America. ‘I had no idea he was going to go all out. It was very thoughtful and sweet.’

Rachel has been watching the little boy part time for over a year, picking him up after school, helping him with homework, taking him to the playground and ferrying him to piano lessons.

‘She has become a part of our family … he absolutely adores her,’ said Curtis’ mom, Elissa Rogers. ‘She’s a just great person with good heart so it’s been a blessing to have her helping us out with Curtis.’

So the little boy was bummed when the pandemic hit and Rachel stopped babysitting for two months.

When his mom mentioned that she would be missing her prom, too, he immediately responded that they throw her a mini prom to make up for it.

An 18-year-old woman created a fake profile to go undercover on Tinder to see what it’s really like for men on dating apps — and she was shocked to discover that it was not as easy as she imagined.

YouTuber Alexander Grace teamed up with his friend Sada for the social experiment, providing her with photos of himself to use for her fake Tinder profile.

Sada admitted that she thought it would be ‘easy peasy’ to get matches with Alex’s pictures, and assumed she’d be lining up dates in no time — but she was discouraged to get fewer matches than she thought, and even more frustrated to be met with radio silence when she would initiate conversation.

When Alex proposed the experiment, he asked Sada to set up a profile as a man seeking women on Tinder.

He gave her three of his own photos, and left her to write the bio information, choose who to swipe on, and send messages.

Sada said that first impression was that it would be easy to get matches because Alex is attractive, but Alex quickly told her that she was going to find more difficulty than she anticipated.

‘I don’t think she realizes how difficult this is gonna be,’ he said.

Sada quickly got to work setting up the profile, explaining to YouTube viewers that she wanted to be ‘very direct and also smooth in the approach.’

She wrote his bio to read: ‘Hi, my name is Alex. I live and work in Lisbon as a psychologist. I’m looking for a nice lady to develop a meaningful relationship with and enjoy the pleasures of life.’

She called the intro ‘simple’ and ‘good’ and got swiping.

But Sada quickly ran into trouble, and was surprised to only match with five women on her first day. Worse, she found chatting with them difficult, complaining that conversing with one of the women was ‘painful’ because she only gave one-word answers.

‘This is going to be much harder than what I was thinking,’ she admitted. ‘I thought this was going to be easy-peasy. I’m going to text these women and they’re going to want to go on a date with me, and I’m going to match a lot but that didn’t happen.’

Day two was better, with Sada picking up 28 matches. But the problem, she said, is that she wasn’t discriminating in who she swiped on.

‘I am just swiping like a maniac and seeing what I can get,’ she said, but noted that she would be more selective going forward, attempting to ‘think more like a man.’

She picked up 13 matches on day three, but just a single match each on days for and five.

‘I am not motivated, I am not happy with the results,’ she said.

In addition to not getting as many matches as she imagined, she was annoyed that women wouldn’t reply to her messages, or they’d stop replying after one or two responses.

‘How can I get these women to go on a date with me if they don’t even reply to me? If we matched, why aren’t we talking?’ she asked.

‘If I compared the experience that a woman has on a dating app and that a man has on a dating app, it’s much different. And it’s weird that I struggled so much. And if I changed my picture to a woman, I don’t struggle at all.

‘This is not very healthy,’ she said. ‘I’m [feeling] down now and it’s not even my damn picture.’

At the end of the experiment, she and Alex talked about how it went.

‘I think it was a failure,’ she said, adding that she had expectations about what would happen and ‘it was like the complete opposite.’

Though she had some success with matches early on, getting them to reply was a ‘nightmare.’

She complained that she struggled and had to ‘lead the conversation.’

But then Alex showed some screengrabs of her chats, which revealed that she started every interaction off with ‘Hi’ and ‘how are you.’

‘Maybe I was ignorant,’ she says, explaining that she has rethought what it’s like for guys on dating apps. ‘I just feel sorry for guys and stuff. I don’t think this is good for anyone, really.

She added that she thought it would be especially easy for her because she herself is a woman.

‘I was like, I know what they want to hear, I know what they want. I was so confident,’ she said, but added that now she is ‘so confused.’

Men commenting on the video and on Reddit are less confused.

‘Yeah dating apps are probably the most depressing experience an average guy can have,’ wrote one.

‘She kept pointing out that he is actually attractive and educated… Imagine what “average” guys experience,’ wrote another.

Some pointed out that Sada may have had a particularly hard time getting women to respond because of the low effort she put into her messages and lack of personalization.

While many of the commenters were frustrated that it’s ‘easier’ for women, a few pointed out that there might be good reasons they’re not replying to messages.

‘I’m a a straight dude who has used and often been excessively frustrated with dating apps. Despite that, I completely understand why the women ghost or don’t replay: They’re inundated with messages and options,’ wrote one, explaining that there’s simply not enough time to reply to everyone.

Social media has anointed an unlikely new sex symbol in the form of Minneapolis mayor Jacob Frey.

Frey, 38, a Democrat who became the city’s mayor in 2018, has become the focus of a social media frenzy in the last week, with dozens of users praising his ‘hot’ looks – and even professing their ‘love’ for the official.

The Twitter sensation comes amid a devastating time for the city of Minneapolis, which has been torn apart by riots over the tragic death of black resident George Floyd, who lost consciousness when white cop Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for eight minutes during an arrest.

Floyd later died, and all four officers who were involved in his arrest, while Chauvin has been charged with third degree murder and manslaughter.

In the wake of the tragedy, Frey has stepped into the national spotlight, holding press conferences about Floyd’s death, while also addressing the resulting riots and protests that broke out both in Minneapolis and in other areas across the country.

But while social media has been flooded with posts about the devastating tragedy surrounding Floyd’s death – and demands for justice against those responsible – Instagram and Twitter have also been filled with posts from users pointing out Frey’s ‘sexy’ appearance.

Some users have admitted their embarrassment at focusing on Frey’s ‘hot’ features in such devastating circumstances, with one person writing:  ‘I know this is wrong [on so many levels] with what’s happening in Minneapolis right now. The gods bless them.

‘But Jacob Frey’s hot. Good hot “DILF” vibes.’

Others have been far less coy in their praise of Frey – with many celebrating both his actions and his looks in the same tweet, highlighting the fact that the mayor called for the officer who was filmed kneeling on Floyd’s neck to be arrested and charged with his death.

‘I think I just fell in love,’ one wrote, adding: ‘The mayor of Minneapolis @jacob_frey is hot *and* a total badass – not afraid to stand up to the police union.’

They also retweeted a link to an article about Frey calling on county attorney Mike Freeman to charge arresting officer Chauvin in the death of Floyd.

One user followed suit, retweeting a post about Frey’s announcement that all four officers who were part of the arrest have been fired, while writing: ‘So Jacob Frey is hot AND quick… perhaps we will stan.’

Dozens of other similar tweets have been shared over the past few days, with users going wild over Frey’s ‘sexy and cute’ looks, as well as the action he has taken in seeking justice for Floyd.

A number of other people have pointed out his remarkable likeness to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau – a comparison that has been made on a number of occasions in the past.

‘Minneapolis mayor, Jacob Frey, looks and acts like Justin Trudeau and cried on TV,’ one person wrote.

‘Jacob Frey is the Justin Trudeau of America,’ another chimed in, while a third added: ‘Jacob Frey is Justin Trudeau x100.’

Although Frey’s online fanclub has certainly grown in the past week, this is not the first time that the Minneapolis mayor has found himself at the center of a collective social media swoon.

In October 2019, Frey hit the headlines when he was mentioned in a scathing tweet by President Donald Trump, who branded the Minneapolis mayor ‘lightweight’ and slammed his decision to charge $530,000 for an arena that was intended to host a Keep America Great Again rally.

Frey responded to the president, writing: ‘Minneapolis taxpayers should not have to bear the brunt of operating costs resulting from the president’s visit.’

The terse conversation between the two prompted a social media spotlight to shine its glare on Frey – who quickly picked up hundreds of fans across the country, and further afield.

Sadly for his most passionate admirers however, Frey is married, and he is expecting his first child with his second wife Sarah Clarke in September of this year.

Frey was previously married to Michelle Lilienthal, whom he tied the knot with in August 2009, before splitting from her in 2014. He then wed Clarke two years later.

Although he is now mayor of Minneapolis, Frey – a lawyer – actually grew up in Virginia, in a suburb of Washington, D.C.

He attended William & Mary, where he was awarded a track scholarship, before later getting a Juris Doctor degree from Villanova; prior to his second stint at college however, Frey tried his hand at becoming a professional athlete, competing for Team USA in the 2007 Pan American Games marathon.

For beauty junkies out there, it’s time to put a pause on contoured cheekbones or a bold lip and play up the eyes.

Audrianna Mora, Licensed Esthetician and Global Education Manager at RevitaLash Cosmetics, reveals an easy to follow 4-step lash routine guide.

1. ALWAYS  REMOVE  MAKEUP COMPLETELY

‘Sleeping in makeup, specifically mascara, is really bad for the health of your lashes, your eyes and your lids. It can cause breakage, irritation, inflammation and infections,’ warns Audrianna.

To ensure all makeup is removed, she recommends using a Micellar Water Lash Wash.

‘Micellar water is made up of microscopic spheres called micelles suspended in soft water, which acts like a magnet to draw out dirt and oil. They are able to remove makeup, sebum, oil and dirt seamlessly, leaving behind clean, moisturized lashes and skin.’

2. INTRODUCE A LASH SERUM TO YOUR DAILY ROUTINE

Sleeping with makeup on causes lash damage.

According to Audrianna, hormones and environmental aggressors can also harm lashes making them weak, brittle and prone to breakage.

The expert recommends lash serums to help protect and strengthen lashes.

‘Using a lash serum like RevitaLash Advanced daily, and applying to clean lashes, will ensure lashes have the nutrients they need to remain strong, healthy, and beautiful.’

3. GET A MULTI-PURPOSE EYE CREAM

Most of us use separate products on our eyes and lashes, but that’s not always necessary.

‘We created a genius multi-tasking eye gel and primer, Aquablur, that is just as good for your orbital contour and lids as it is for your lashes and brows,’ shares Audrianna.

‘Perfect for morning or nighttime use, this eye gel hydrates, primes and soothes the eye area while adding strength to lashes and brows.’

4. USE A LASH-LOVING MASCARA

For fluttery long lashes, mascara is a must. But according to the expert, not all mascaras are created equal.

‘Many mascaras can be drying, and most lack ingredients that nourish the lashes,’  Audrianna shared.

She recommends RevitaLash’s Double-Ended Volume Set that not only volumizes and lengthens lashes, but also moisturizes, improves shine and conditions them too.

‘Not only will your lashes look long, lush and fabulous, but they’ll also be strong, flexible and conditioned.’

Thylane made her adult runway debut in February 2017, when she walked for Dolce & Gabbana at Milan Fashion Week. The debut was such a success the designer duo invited her back to walk for them again in September 2017.

She was just four when she walked for Jean Paul Gaultier, and then became the youngest ever model to pose for French Vogue.

And she’s no stranger to backlash, with the Vogue editorial attracting criticism for being too ‘sexualised’.

But her mother Veronika Loubry, a fashion designer, defended the cover at the time.

She told a French newspaper: ‘The only thing that shocks me about the photo is the necklace that she’s wearing, which is worth 3 million Euros,’ or about $4.3 million.

Thylane, who is the daughter of French footballer Patrick Blondeau, was also chosen as a brand ambassador for L’Oréal, and has been named the face of a perfume by French designer Lolita Lempicka.

She has appeared in Dolce & Gabbana’s Spring 2017 campaign alongside Zendaya, Lucky Blue Smith, and Presley Gerber.

The teenager certainly has mingled with the creme de la creme of the next generation of models, having been pictured walking alongside the likes of Jourdan Dunn and the offspring of celebrities, including Christian Combs and Lori Harvey, the children of Diddy and Steve Harvey, respectively.

Scones, sandwiches, sunshine and a chance to chat to her subjects, it’s no wonder the Queen loves hosting her annual summer garden parties.

The gatherings, at Buckingham Palace and the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh, have been taking place for 160 years with the Royal Family throwing open their gates to the great and good of local communities, who feast on 20,000 sandwiches, 20,000 slices of cake and 27,000 cups of tea.

This year, sadly, all four garden parties have been cancelled. Palace sources say the Queen, who looks forward to the events more than any other royal occasion, was ‘deeply disappointed’ they couldn’t take place.

The 30,000 guests — whose gilt-edged invitations were sent out earlier this year — have been invited to attend next year’s parties instead.

But there’s no reason not to enjoy the lovely weather, with a royal tea party in your own garden.

There’s even help on hand from the Palace chefs, who have been sharing their recipes for tea-time classics on the Royal Family’s official Instagram account.

I called on royal chef Darren McGrady, who cooked for the Queen for 11 years, for his step-by-step guide to making an afternoon tea Her Majesty would love.

SCONES WITH JAM FIRST… THEN CREAM

'These are the Queen's favourite,' says Darren. 'She has them for tea every day, wherever she is in the world: plain one day; fruit scones the next'

‘These are the Queen’s favourite,’ says Darren. ‘She has them for tea every day, wherever she is in the world: plain one day; fruit scones the next.’

To make ten royal scones, mix 420g plain flour, 70g granulated sugar and 4 teaspoons of baking powder in a bowl, before adding 110g softened butter and rubbing it between your fingers until the mixture turns into fine breadcrumbs.

Next, make a well in the middle and add a beaten egg and 95ml milk. Use a metal spoon to bring the mixture together and then dig in your hands.

This stage is messy and I ended up with flour all over my party dress and clumps of dough wedged between my fingers. ‘It’s important you don’t knead it,’ Darren explains.

‘You want the scones light and fluffy. Once the dough has come together, turn it out on to a floury worktop and roll it to around 2.5cm thick.’

Cut circles using a 5cm cutter. Put them on a baking sheet a few centimetres apart, brush the tops with egg yolk and bake the scones for 15-20 minutes at 180c.

‘When they’re ready they’ll be golden brown on top, firm on the outside and gorgeously soft in the middle.’

Now for the controversial bit. Jam or cream first? ‘The Queen is always jam first, followed by a layer of delicious clotted cream,’ Darren says.

The Queen’s favourite jam is made from wild strawberries (fraises des bois), picked from the gardens at Balmoral Castle.

I’ve had to make do with a jar from my local supermarket, but I did manage to get my hands on some clotted cream — and the combination is truly mouth-watering.

CORONATION CHICKEN ROLLS

The key is to cut them to just the right size. 'There's a huge focus on everything being tiny ¿ just one bite,' explains Darren

The key is to cut them to just the right size. ‘There’s a huge focus on everything being tiny — just one bite,’ explains Darren

Bridge rolls — small, soft, fingershaped rolls — were a favourite of the Queen Mother, and regularly make an appearance at garden parties, filled with coronation chicken, which has been on the menu since the Queen’s Coronation in 1953.

The key is to cut them to just the right size. ‘There’s a huge focus on everything being tiny — just one bite,’ explains Darren.

‘The Queen is very particular about this. She wants everyone to feel at ease — so, if you’ve just popped a sandwich in your mouth and turn around to find the Queen behind you, you don’t have to spend ages chomping away.’

His recipe, which makes six portions, requires 450g boneless, skinless chicken breasts — which are poached in a large pan with an onion, four sticks of celery, a bay leaf and 1.4 litres of cold water.

The next bit is easy: mix 230g mayonnaise, 125g yoghurt and 60g double cream together with a tablespoon of curry paste, a teaspoon of sugar, the juice of a lime and a handful each of diced red pepper, diced red onion, diced mango, diced pineapple and diced tinned apricot, before seasoning.

The curry paste makes the mixture bright yellow and it smells fragrant and spicy. I finish by cutting the chicken into bite-size pieces and stirring these into the mix.

I’ve bought brioche rolls, which were the closest I could find to bridge rolls, so I slice each in half and dollop a generous serving of coronation chicken inside.

I don’t bother making mine any smaller, I’m unlikely to be interrupted by anyone — let alone a royal — and they’re far too tasty to cut in two.

SHORTBREAD FINGERS

Darren — who worked at Buckingham Palace from 1982 to 1993 — remembers baking this shortbread for Lady Sarah Chatto, Princess Margaret’s daughter. Sieve 225g plain flour, 115g cornflour and 115g icing sugar into a bowl. Cut 225g unsalted butter into pieces and rub it into the dry mixture until it forms a ball. Then dust a rectangular mould with flour and press the ball of dough into it until it’s around a centimetre thick. Tip the shortbread out on to a tray lined with baking paper, prick it all over with a fork and bake at 180c for 20 minutes. Next cut the shortbread into fingers, only going a third of the way. It’s important to do this while it’s hot, as it means it will snap apart easily when it cools. Finish with a dusting of granulated sugar.

PIMM’s FRUIT COCKTAIL

'[Drinking] in the royal tent, it's just not the done thing ¿ you don't want people getting tipsy at the Palace,' says Darren.

'[Drinking] in the royal tent, it's just not the done thing ¿ you don't want people getting tipsy at the Palace,' says Darren.

‘[Drinking] in the royal tent, it’s just not the done thing — you don’t want people getting tipsy at the Palace,’ says Darren.

No garden party would be complete without a glass of Pimm’s — but royal gatherings are, officially, dry affairs.

‘Even in the royal tent, it’s just not the done thing — you don’t want people getting tipsy at the Palace,’ says Darren.

Instead, during the day, guests are offered tea (usually Twinings Earl Grey) or iced coffee, made with coffee which is supplied by London-based merchant H.R. Higgins. But at 6pm, when the party’s over and the guests have gone home, Her Majesty can be found sipping on something a little stronger.

If it’s not her trademark gin and Dubonnet, it’s almost invariably a glass of Pimm’s and lemonade — made to a special royal recipe.

Darren explains: ‘She likes the gin-based Pimm’s No. 1, with lemonade; but the interesting bit is the garnish, which makes it more like a fruit cocktail than a drink. ‘It’s made with oranges, lemons, cucumber, mint, strawberries, cherries and borage [an edible garden plant].’

I dutifully put every fruit I can find in the fridge into my jug of Pimm’s — and even forage in the garden for some borage, which gives it a fresh, and rather herby aftertaste.

CHOCOLATE SPONGE CAKE

Although chocolate doesn’t always make an appearance at garden parties — ‘it’s normally warm, so you risk it melting and going on the ladies’ dresses’

The Queen is a ‘chocoholic’, says Darren, and both her go-to cakes — a no-bake chocolate biscuit cake made with Rich Tea biscuits, and a sponge recipe dating back to 1899 which she has on her birthday — are flavoured with chocolate.

Although chocolate doesn’t always make an appearance at garden parties — ‘it’s normally warm, so you risk it melting and going on the ladies’ dresses’ — there are always large cakes on the tables in the tea tent, so guests can cut a slice of whichever they prefer.

This chocolate sponge recipe is Her Majesty’s favourite. I start by whisking two whole eggs and six yolks together with 115g granulated sugar, and placing the bowl over a pan of hot water so it heats up.

I whisk until it doubles in volume before adding 55g melted butter, and 55g plain flour and 30g cocoa powder, sieved together.

Next, I spoon the mixture into a lined, greased 20cm cake tin, and bake it for 20 minutes at 180c.

While the cake cooks, I make the topping and filling, by melting 570ml double cream with 450g dark chocolate.

Once this, and the cake, have cooled, I slice the sponge horizontally into three and spread it in between each layer, before topping with yet more chocolatey icing and chocolate curls.

It’s decadent and requires an extremely sweet tooth — something, it seems, Her Majesty and I have in common.

CUCUMBER SANDWICHES

An afternoon tea classic, cucumber sandwiches sound simple — but, made according to the royal recipe, they’re the fiddliest dish on the menu.

First, the bread. It must be brown (white is used for egg salad, ham and mustard or beef and horseradish), cut wafer-thin, crusts off and lightly buttered.

Next, the cucumber, which is cut with a vegetable peeler, rather than a knife, to give perfectly thin, evenly sliced, pieces.

Darren explains: ‘Start by peeling the whole cucumber. Keep going with the peeler, slicing the flesh in long, thin strips, until you get to the seeds. Turn it over and peel it again from the other side. Then, lay the strips over the buttered bread and cut them to size.’

The sandwiches are finished with a sprinkle of black pepper — never salt, as it pulls the moisture out and makes the cucumber chewy. They’re then sliced into thin, dainty fingers.

They are utterly delicious — crisp and fresh, and a lovely contrast to all the sweet dishes. They aren’t the Queen’s favourite sandwiches, however.

These are a Palace creation called ‘jam pennies’, made from white bread, butter and jam, and cut into circles the size of old English pennies.

‘They’re what the Queen and Princess Margaret used to have in the nursery,’ Darren explains.

‘When she’s on her own for tea, she likes a small plate of them.

‘But they’re not for garden parties — people expect a bit more than a jam sandwich.’

STRAWBERRY SWISS ROLL

This teatime treat is notoriously difficult to make, but a must for a royal spread.

I whisk eight egg yolks with 320g granulated sugar before folding in four whipped egg whites, 160g potato flour — a thickener similar to cornflour — and four more whipped egg whites.

The mixture is meant to be light, fluffy and full of air, so it’s important not to over-beat. I pour it into a greased, lined Swiss roll tin and bake the sponge at 180c for 10-15 minutes. It’s ready once it springs back.

Once cooled, I spread it with a thick layer of strawberry jam (leftover from my scones) and 570ml thick cream, which I’ve whipped to soft peaks.

Even Mary Berry struggles with the next bit but, going ever-so-slowly, I manage to roll the sponge up into a tight spiral, with only a few cracks, and a liberal dusting of icing sugar saves the day once again.

I sprinkle on some strawberries, slice it into wedges and it’s ready to serve.

RASPBERRY TARTLET

The Queen loved these little tarts as a child, and they were often made when she and Princess Margaret had been raspberry-picking at Balmoral.

Today, they’re a garden party staple. They’re also easy to cheat, as you can buy the pastry cases ready-made from the supermarket.

The tart cases are then filled with pastry cream, made by mixing 115g sugar, 35g flour, a teaspoon of vanilla extract, a pinch of salt and four egg yolks together in a bowl, then adding 375ml warm whole milk and whisking it over a bowl of boiling water until it reaches the consistency of thick custard.

If this sounds like too much hassle, you can also use whipped cream, flavoured with vanilla extract.

The final touch is to top each tart with upturned raspberries — and, Darren’s secret tip, ‘brush the berries with melted jam to give a lovely shine’.

Two dads officially adopted their five-month-old son during a Zoom ceremony amid the pandemic after meeting the baby in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) earlier this year.

Four months ago, Anthony Lach, 31, and Chris More, 29, from Orlando, Florida, received a phone call on New Year’s Eve about a baby that had just been born and was ready to be adopted. They immediately flew to Arizona to meet their future son, Parker Terence Lachmore, who was in the NICU.

‘They just kept telling us that he was going to be in the NICU a while because he was very sick,’ Lach told Good Morning America. ‘It was scaring us but every time we looked at him we just knew that he was our child and we figured no matter what it could possibly be, that we’d stay with him and we’d get through it.’

The dad explained that the nurses weren’t initially allowed to speak to them about Patrick’s health because they hadn’t signed any adoption papers yet.

The baby boy had a traumatic birth and an inflamed lung. He was on CPAP [continuous positive airway pressure] to help with his respiratory issues and had a feeding tube. Nurses predicted he would have to stay in the NICU for weeks, possibly even months.

Lach and More signed adoption papers for Parker and prepared for a lengthy stay in the NICU, but their son was ready to leave in just nine days.

‘The NICU nurses told us that once we started to hold and carry him and feed him, that he was getting himself better,’ More told GMA. ‘He decided that he was ready to come home with us.’

Lach and More didn’t expect to be called for a potential adoption for at least several months and didn’t have any baby supplies at the time.

Friends organized a registry for them while they were away to ensure they had everything they needed when they arrived home with Parker.

The couple had planned to formally adopt Parker on April 15, but the courthouse had temporarily stopped adoptions amid the coronavirus pandemic. Earlier this month, they learned the court was now holding virtual adoptions.

They officially adopted Parker on May 14 during a Zoom call with about 25 of their close family and friends. After the ceremony, they celebrated with a car parade.

Lach shared a photo of himself posing with More and their baby boy while holding gold balloons that spelled out ‘Gotcha’ on the big day.

‘Worth the wait. Today our adoption journey hit the greatest milestone possible!’ he wrote on Instagram. ‘Parker is officially a Lachmore and will forever be with his Daddies.

‘Thank you to our amazing attorney and Judge Cupp for allowing us to finalize our adoption on Zoom this morning. 5.14.2020, our baby boy’s Gotcha Day!’

Parker’s middle name is Terrence in honor of More’s father, who passed away in England right before his grandson was born.

‘It was such an overwhelming emotion,’ More said of officially adopting Parker amid the global crisis.

‘We live in such a dark time, but there was so much light on that day,’ Lach noted. ‘It was just amazing.’
