While Instagram filters may add that extra something to our selfies, legendary actress Dame Helen Mirren insists they are ‘on the way out.’
The L’Oreal Paris Ambassador, 73, made the comment while speaking about how the representation of women is starting to become more realistic in tandem with the #MeToo movement.
‘Filters are on the way out, I promise you,’ she told Grazia. ‘Because it was a lovely thing to be able to do but the whole “Look at me, don’t I look gorgeous? Look everybody…”
She added: ”As everybody does it, very soon people will go: “No, I’m not doing that, it’s much more interesting to not do that!”‘
Dame Helen Mirren, 73, believes Instagram filters are on their way out as ‘everybody does it.’ Pictured, the legendary actress was unrecognisable as she unveiled her Oscar’s transformation to her Instagram following in 2018
But the Academy, Emmy and Tony Award-winning actress revealed that she’s still a sucker for an Instagram make-up tutorial.
‘I love the people showing you how to do make-up on Instagram,’ she told the publication. ‘People loved that before and after Instagram of me with absolutely no make-up on and then with it on. Both totally unfiltered.’
The British actress has taken to Instagram in the past to show her non-filtered and no make-up selfies – including when she got a blow-dry before the Oscars.
Dressing in a bathrobe, she captioned the down-to-earth post: ‘Very before .. Richard and Joe and Lee work their magic what did you think? it all came naturally?’
The star then showed off the results, posing with her makeup artists and hair team, while looking stunning in a bright pink gown.
Dame Helen Mirren went on to explain that one thing that always irked her was the cosmetics industry using youthful models in their advertisements – as it excludes people including her own generation.
While the star criticsed some aspects of social media, she praised the platform for an Instagram makeup tutorial. Pictured, Dame Helen Mirren walked the red carpet as she arrived to the 91st Academy Awards held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on February 24, 2019
‘It’s extremely annoying to women of my generation and others following mine to have beauty products sold on a 15-year-old face,’ she said.
‘The minute you use the word beauty, the people who feel like they are not beautiful are immediately excluded.’
Despite her sky-rocketing career, the legendary actress has previously told how she’s been plagued with insecurities all of her life.
Speaking to The Daily Telegraph in March last year she said: ‘I have experienced insecurity all my life, and I still do on a daily basis. I remember having these panic attacks but not at the obvious moments.’
The Woman in Gold star confessed there were ‘so many things’ she didn’t like about her body when she was propelled into the limelight as an actress in the late 1960’s.
She explained: ‘I have never felt beautiful. There are people who are beautiful and I’m objective enough to know that I don’t fit into that category.
‘For me, still now, it’s to do with wit and intelligence rather than the way I look. I don’t feel clever or funny enough.’
