Couple purchase an old crumbling terrace and transform it into a stunning three bedroom home

A rundown half-demolished terrace has been transformed into a stunning three bedroom home in the heart of Sydney.

The house at 613 Bourke Street in the leafy suburb of Surry Hills once had a ‘Danger: Construction Site’ sign on the front door and was nothing but a crumbling frame without a first floor.

Now it has three modern bedrooms, a garage, three bathrooms and a chic studio and is expected to sell for $2.5 million.

It’s been completely renovated after it last changed hands in 2016, selling for $1.6 million with only the shell of the property remaining.

Agent Nic Krasnostein, from Ray White Double Bay, told Domain that the home was once an unfinished renovation project.

Unfortunately the previous owner who started demolishing the building couldn’t afford the build.

It was picked up by Peter Bakhos and his wife, who saw the opportunity to start work straight away.

They wanted to create a luxurious terrace that was going to attract an upmarket buyer who would appreciate the design that they were imagining for the house.

Mr Bakhos and his wife have completed four other renovations prior and due to other commitments this house took them three years to complete rather than the possible eight months.

‘We love the open void space in the dining area as it makes the house look so much bigger, and also brings in so much light,’ Mr Bakhos said.

The couple were right to invest the time and money into the house as there has already been an overwhelming amount of interest.

Ray White have reported that on the first weekend that it was open for inspection 45 groups viewed the property.

Mr Krasnostein said the renovation job was ‘right up there’ in terms of finishes and attention to detail.

‘It’s really been built exceptionally. There are rooms that can be made into bedrooms or kept as is,’ Mr Krasnostein said.

‘The style, we feel, really resonates with high-end warehouse conversions and buyers who would gravitate towards those would be attracted towards this.’
